Designs Innovative Transit Shelters
for City of Toronto

TORONTO - June 26, 2001 - Winners of an international design competition for street furniture, Kramer Design Associates (KDA) was chosen to design the new transit shelters now being installed as part of a multi-million dollar advertising partnership between the City of Toronto and Canada's leader in outdoor advertising, Mediacom.

Notable for its state-of-the-art design and materials, the first of these units was unveiled near City Hall by Mayor Mel Lastman on June 25, 2001.Over the next four years, all of Toronto's 825 existing transit shelters will be replaced with the new KDA design.

The sleek silver structures bring a new aesthetic and functionality to the city's streetscape. With a clear cantilevered roof and unobstructed sides constructed of high-grade aluminium and tempered glass, the shelters were designed to be visually lighter and more transparent, meeting three important objectives:

  •  increased visibility for advertisers
  •  improved wind and rain deflection
  •  a more welcoming and safer public environment

"KDA is pleased that the introduction of this newly designed transit shelter will greatly enhance  the quality of Toronto's streetscape, and provide a better service experience for local residents and tourists," states Jeremy Kramer, Principal and Creative Director of Kramer Design Associates.

The first of their kind in Canada, the new Toronto transit shelters include backlit advertising cassions, some of which feature a new scrolling display technique that allows three different advertisements to be presented in a 15 second continuous loop.

To construct the Mediacom shelters, KDA formed a design-build alliance with the Montreal engineering and manufacturing firm, Enseicom. The team is now strategically poised to bring several new and innovative street furniture amenities to local and international markets over the next 12 months.

"Leading media companies competing to control advertising on our streets now provide cities with street furniture such as transit shelters, benches, trash receptacles, and even washrooms, all designed to accommodate revenue-generating opportunities." explains Mr. Kramer. "We are committed to providing cities world-wide with an exciting new line of street furniture that complements their unique landscapes, is sensitive to user needs and satisfies advertiser's requirements."

KDA also designed the new transit shelters for the city of Mississauga.
