Coordinated with The City of Toronto’s Green Energy Act, KDA's street furniture designs utilize energy-efficient lighting, off-grid power solutions, and modular design specifications to reduce wastage long-term.

Sustainability

As part of our overall philosophy, KDA is committed to having a responsible attitude towards environmental sustainability. This philosophy is carried through not only in our design work, but also in the day-to-day management of our office.

Our Work

KDA incorporates environmental sustainability into our design work wherever possible and we strive to reduce the environmental impact of our designs from concept, manufacture and installation.

Effective Signage & Wayfinding Strategy
KDA endeavours to make our signage programs strategically more efficient though the reduction of material usage and wastage, the utilization of recyclable materials and energy efficient products, and the minimization of signage elements in the environment. KDA’s well-planned programs improve wayfinding efficiency of travel and parking thereby reducing fuel emissions. As members of the prestigious Society of Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD), KDA fully supports SEGD Greens Paper, a leading report related to sustainability in environmental design.

Less Car Dependence

KDA promotes and improves pedestrian travel through our innovative signage, wayfinding and street furniture designs, many of which are solar-powered and use recyclable materials. Our on-foot and on-bike initiatives, including the design of the bicycle parking structures, help reduce green-house gases caused by vehicle emissions.

Off-grid Power Solutions
KDA has designed outdoor security lighting for street furniture and signage displays that are completely off-grid with photovoltaic systems, and we have recommended the recycled energy source provider, Bullfrog, to work with Municipalities for products that have significant power requirements.

Dynamic Technology

The use of Dynamic Technology reduces the number of static message signs, that are paper or vinyl faces, and reduces information obsolescence by enabling easy, off-site programmed message updates. Blue-tooth and wireless technology helps users actively participate in the wayfinding system with their IPhones and PDAs.

Design for Multiple Application
KDA strives to create designs that utilize similar, interchangeable components, and alternative hardware fasteners, rather than adhesives. Wherever possible, we request the use of finishes and production processes that are non-hazardous and contribute to a reduced carbon foot-print.

Materlals Selection
Recycled materials are finally becoming widely available for our designs, and we specify these where opportunity allows. KDA always considers not just the impact of the materials during manufacture and installation, but also their durability and how that affects the product long-term.

Designing to Improve Lifecycle & Consumption
KDA works closely with fabricators to understand how components will be built and installed to maximize their lifecycle, including issues pertaining to vandalism, maintenance and parts replacement. We also consider how to reduce the potential of material wastage during fabrication, such as tailoring component sizes to maximize the number that can be produced from a single substrate.

LEED Partners

KDA collaborates with many developers and architects who place sustainability high on their agenda. We have provided design and consultancy services on several projects that have received both silver and gold LEED certification. We recently completed all signage and wayfinding for the new RBC Centre, a LEED Gold building, and the York University Computer Sciences Building.

Our Office
In our own operations, KDA has implemented a number of measures to operate in a sustainable manner. We regularly review what we do and modify our way of working
as new technologies become available.

We have a comprehensive recycling and ‘Consider-Before-You- Print’ program.

We promote the use of online conference presentations and issuance of drawings electronically to reduce the environmental impact of staff travel and printing respectively.

Our office is located directly at a public transit drop and near a subway stop and we encourage use of transit by staff, visitors and suppliers. Additionally, many of our designers use bicycles as their primary mode of transportation seven months of year.

We have made sustainable decisions on the purchasing of consumables, recycling and energy use, and our cleaning staff use only natural cleaning products.
